McAfee® Firewall Blocking Internet Connection

Problem Description:
McAfee Firewall is designed to block hackers from gaining access to your computer. However if the firewall is not configured properly it may block certain ports or applications from connecting to the internet.
Affected Products:
McAfee Firewall; Other McAfee Product Suites in which Firewall software is bundled.
Cause of the Problem:
  • McAfee Firewall is not configured properly.
  • Another Firewall is conflicting with McAfee Firewall.
  • Some other networking issue is blocking internet access.
Fixing McAfee Firewall Internet Connection Problem:
Step 1 : Check if McAfee Firewall is Root Cause
  1. Double-click the M icon in your taskbar. Click Web and Email Protection. Click the Firewall link.
  2. In the Firewall options window, click the Turn Off button. McAfee Firewall will confirm that you want to disable the service with a popup message.
  3. Test your Internet connection.
  4. If you cannot connect to the internet, turn on the firewall. The problem is with another application or operating system or ISP.
  5. If you can connect to the internet the problem is with the McAfee Firewall configuration. Go to Step 2.
Step 2 : Restore Firewall Defaults
  1. You may have created certain rules that are blocking ports or certain applications. So quickest way to find if this is the case is by resetting to default configuration. Note this will erase all custom settings.
  2. Open the Firewall settings. Click Restore Defaults. The SecurityCenter might prompt you for network or application permissions.
  3. If you still cannot access the Internet, then maybe there is another Firewall or Security software blocking the internet.
  4. Go to Step 3.
Step 3 : Check for non-McAfee security software.
  1. Check the list of incompatible third-party applications which must be uninstalled.
  2. Activate the "Add or Remove Program" control panel applet.
  3. Search for any conflicting Security Software.
  4. Proceed to uninstall it by selecting it and then clicking on uninstall.
