Problem Description:
The installation simply hangs in mid-stream. Or you may get a pop-up saying "checking your computer for threats...." or something similar and installation box goes blank. Or you may get an error pop-up with a numeric error code.
Affected Products:
McAfee AntiVirus Plus, McAfee Internet Security, McAfee Total Protection, McAfee All Access, McAfee Family Protection, McAfee Live Safe
Cause of the Problem:
  • Windows Operating system is not up-to-date and requires latest patches an update.
  • McAfee Antivirus software is being blocked by third-party antivirus software.
  • Conflict with an older version of McAfee software is blocking installation.
  • Windows user profile setting is blocking the installation or download of McAfee.
Fix for McAfee Installation Problems:
Step 1 : Ensure Windows is Updated with latest updates & service packs.
  1. Open Windows Update from your Start menu, or open your web browser and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
  2. Follow all on-screen instructions to ensure you have the most current Microsoft Service Pack and all Critical or Important updates.
Step 2 : Uninstall any existing third-party security software.
  1. Check the list of incompatible third-party applications which must be uninstalled at http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx.
  2. Check if any of the above software is present on your computer by activating the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet.
  3. Select the conflicting software from the list shown by the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet. Proceed to uninstall it.
Step 3 : Uninstall older version of McAfee software.
  1. If you are upgrading from an older version of McAfee to a newer more advanced one, it sometimes helps to remove the older version.
  2. Check if an older version of McAfee is present on your computer by activating the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet.
  3. Select the older version of McAfee from the list shown by the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet. Proceed to uninstall it.
