Office Application Keeps Crashing

Problem Description:
Microsoft Office Application may sometimes repeatedly crash while processing a document. This typically happens only for one of the Application Programs in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word). Or sometimes when you try to process a legacy document created with an older version of Microsoft Office (such as Office 2003) or reinstalled an older Office on one of Microsoft’s new Windows operating systems such as Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
Affected Products:
Microsoft Office 2013, Microsoft Office 2010, Office 365, and older versions of Office
Cause of the Problem:
  • Add-in may be interfering with Office Application
  • Latest Windows or Office updates not installed
  • Windows computer infected with a virus
Instructions for Fixing Office Crashing Problem :
Step 1 : Try Running Office without Add-Ins
  1. Try starting the Office Application causing problem without add-ins to see if the problem goes away.
  2. If you are running Windows 8, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
  3. Type Run in the search box, and then tap or click Run.
  4. Type “Office Application” /safe, and then click OK. Here “Office Application” is the one that is causing problem.
  5. If the crash issue is resolved, then the problem is with Add-Ins. Remove all the add-ins, and add them one at a time to find the problematic Add-In.
  6. If issue is not resolved, go to Step 2.
Step 2 : Run the Office Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT)
  1. OffCAT is diagnostic program provided by Microsoft that analyzes the current Office profile. The tool generates a report that highlights any known problems that it found in your profile.
  2. For any problems that are listed in the report, you are provided with a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article that outlines a possible fix for the problem.
  3. You can download the tool from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36852. Install and run the program to create the report.
  4. If the report does not point to any problems, Go to Step 3.
Step 3 : Check for and Install Latest Outlook Updates
  1. Windows Update, if configured properly, can automatically download and install latest Office updates.
  2. Installing important, recommended, and optional Office and Windows updates can often correct this problem.
  3. Each Windows version has slightly different way to install updates. For Windows 7, Open Windows Update by typing Windows Update in Start Button search box, click Windows Update.
  4. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  5. If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you to review important updates, install Click Install updates.
