Instructions for Fixing Outlook Performance Issues :
Step 1 : Check for and Install Latest Outlook Updates
  1. Windows Update, if configured properly, can automatically download and install latest Outlook updates.
  2. Installing important, recommended, and optional Outlook and Windows updates can often correct Outlook performance problems.
  3. Each Windows version has slightly different way to install updates. For Windows 7, Open Windows Update by typing Windows Update in Start Button search box, click Windows Update.
  4. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  5. If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you to review important updates, Click Install updates.
  6. Check if your Outlook Performance problem is fixed. If not, go to Step 2.
Step 2 : Check if Add-Ins Causing the Problem
  1. Try starting Outlook without add-ins to see if the problem goes away.
  2. If you are running Windows 8, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
  3. Type Run in the search box, and then tap or click Run.
  4. Type Outlook /safe, and then click OK.
  5. the performance issue is resolved, then the problem is with Add-Ins. Remove all add-ins, and add them one at a time to find the problematic Add-In.
  6. If issue is not resolved, go to Step 3.
Step 3 : Check the Size of Your Mail Box
  1. As your mailbox size increases, more resources are needed to open each folder. If you have a large number of items in any single folder, you may experience performance issues during certain operations.
  2. To check the size of your mailbox Open Outlook, from the File, Edit View toolbar at the top of the window select “Tools” and within the drop down that opens up select “Mailbox cleanup”; Within the Mailbox Cleanup window, select “View Mailbox Size”.
  3. If Outlook Mailbox size is large (say more than a gigabyte), it may be the cause of the problem. You need to move some of the large folders from the mailbox to an archive. The mails will still be there, but won’t take space in your mail box.
