There are many causes of this problem. One need to first define what “slow means” before this problem can be fixed. For instance only certain applications maybe running slowly, or the internet appears to be slow, or Windows takes too long to start up or shut-down.
Affected Products:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and other versions of Windows
Cause of the Problem:
  • High-level of disk fragmentation.
  • Third-party or unwanted browser plug-ins.
  • Multiple antivirus security programs installed.
  • Possible infection from a virus or other malicious software.
Instructions to Fix Slow Windows Computer Problem :
Step 1 : Try Defragmenting the Hard Disk Drive
  1. Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer.
  2. To defragment your hard disk, Open Disk Defragmenter applet in the Control Panel.
  3. Before you decide to defragment the disk, determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not. Click Analyze disk.
  4. Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of fragmentation on the disk in the Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.
  5. Click Defragment disk. Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation.
Step 2 : Check Browser Toolbars and Plug-ins
  1. Start the browser you use for surfing the net.
  2. Depending on your browser, do one of the following.

  4. For Mozilla Firefox: On the top-right corner, click the Open menu icon, and click Add-ons. In the Add-ons Manager page, select Extensions.
  5. For Google Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon, and click Settings. Under Chrome, click Extensions.

  7. If the browser is fast, the problem is with one of the toolbars. Enable the browser plug-in one at a time to find the malicious one, and keep it disabled.
Step 3 : Uninstall any third-party non-Norton security software
  1. Check if you have any third-party Security or Firewall software present.
  2. Open the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet.
  3. If you find a Non-Norton security software, select it, and uninstall it.
  4. Test the speed of your computer by performing common tasks such as browsing, opening Microsoft Office applications, and other such task.
  5. If the problem persists go to Step 4.
Step 4 : Check for any Virus Infection
