Problem Description:
If you're having problems with your PC, that cannot be fixed, one option is take back your Windows to an earlier instance. This should be done only for the most complicated problems that you have been unable to fix. Windows offers 3 different options to go back : Refresh, Restore, or Reset.
Affected Products:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 and all other versions of Windows
Cause of the Problem:
  • Not applicable.
Difference between Refresh or Restore or Reset :
Step 1 : Refreshing Windows
  1. Windows is reinstalled in this option.
  2. The reinstallation process keeps your personal files and settings.
  3. You also keeps the apps that came with your PC and the apps you installed from the Windows Store.
  4. Applications that you installed from discs or websites will be removed.
  5. So this is the first option to try in case you want to go back to an earlier environment.
Step 2 : Reset Windows
  1. As in Windows Refresh, Windows is reinstalled in this option.
  2. But Resetting your PC, deletes your personal files and settings.
  3. Your PC settings will be changed back to their default settings.
  4. You get to keep only those apps that came with your PC. All other apps are deleted.
  5. So if you need to use this option, make sure you have created a backup for all of your data and files. And also have backup of programs that you have purchased.
Step 3 : Restore Windows
  1. Windows is not reinstalled with this option. System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photo.
  2. These changes to Windows may have been done as part of the regular Windows Update process or changes you may have initiated by changing Windows configuration or changing registry settings and other such system changes.
